The two stumble upon Asarano Village, a village where martial arts are taught under Master Nguyen. end up decades before King Boo even thought about taking over The Mushroom Kingdom, crash-landing in the land of Asarano, with The Time Turner 2000 nowhere to be found, and only one piece of E. The unlikely duo take The Time Turner 2000 back in time, but along the way, something goes awry.Ĭhapter 1: The Trials of Asarano Mountain Gadd's motives, the two find a common goal in defeating King Boo and come to a consensus and team up. Gadd as he is finishing up his preparations for the jump in time, and after being told of E. promises his father that he will find a way to take back The Kingdom. Meanwhile, Bowser has also been defeated when attempting to oppose King Boo in hopes of taking The Mushroom Kingdom as well, and Bowser Jr. Gadd also has a secret weapon that he has recently invented that he will take with him on the journey. He plans to go back in time to before King Boo took over and give Mario and his fellow Mushroom Kingdom residents gadgets that will enable them to defeat King Boo, preventing him from ever taking over the Kingdom in the first place. Gadd believes he can reverse it through his new time-altering gadget, The Time Turner 2000, a time machine. King Boo has taken over The Mushroom Kingdom and claimed it as his own, defeating Mario and his friends and capturing Princess Peach. The game initially takes place before the events of Super Mario Sunshine. The locations are Asarano Village, The Great Nimbus Sea, Toadsville, Murdock Metropolis, The Subterranean Complex, Kerrigan Island, and King Boo's Palace. ![]() There are seven main locations the player must navigate through. The game takes place in a past version of The Mushroom Kingdom, before it was taken over by King Boo. ![]() This continues the recurring theme of Mario RPGs and is one of the more innovative features of gameplay in Super Mario RPG 2. The action command consists of timed button presses during an attack, special move, defense, or item usage. The combat is based on a traditional turn based battle system with the addition of action commands that amplify a move's effects. For example, Toadsworth's abilities predominantly consist of healing and buffing abilities that improve the rest of your party's strength, defense, speed, etc., whereas Boondock is more of an offensive character, with regular attacks that deal lots of damage and abilities that focus on lowering the enemies' defense and attack. Each of the six characters has a unique set of attacks and techniques. The three characters used in battle can either be chosen in the menu outside of battle, or switched during battle as a move. By the end of the game, the player will have a party of at most six characters (five required characters and one optional one), though only three members can be used during a battle at any given time. This allows the player to evade unnecessary battles. There are no random encounters and as such enemies are visible in the field a battle ensues only if Mario comes in contact with one. However, this time around, the various obstacles pitted against the player are surmountable through Professor E. Much of Super Mario RPG 2's gameplay takes place outside of battles and plays like an isometric 3D platformer, in which traditional Mario elements such as punching floating question blocks from below are prominent. Like most traditional JRPGs, there are two main sections to the game: adventuring and turn-based battle sequences. Gadd's Race Against Time plays very similarly to it's prequel.
